Westlicht. Schauplatz für Fotografie cordially invites you to the opening of the exhibition on Wednesday, March 1 at 7 pm.

Welcome: Peter Coeln, President WestLicht.

Speeches on the exhibition:
Rita Nitsch
Julia Moebus-Puck, curator of the exhibition

As one of the initiators of Viennese Actionism, Hermann Nitsch created one of the most radical works of contemporary art. His actions, culminating in the Gesamtkunstwerk of the Orgies Mysteries Theater. He worked with blood and real bodies. He combined painterly, graphic, musical and performative elements to create an experience that engaged all the senses. From the very beginning, photography was the decisive instrument for documenting the fleeting actions, some of which took place out of public view, for posterity.

For the first time, the Fotomuseum WestLicht is putting the photography of the work of Hermann Nitsch and his collaboration with photographers such as Ludwig Hoffenreich, Franziska Cibulka, Siegfried Klein and Heinz Cibulka at the centre of an exhibition. The partly large-format original prints and rare contact sheets on display not only convey an impression of the presence of the actions but also allow an insight into Nitsch’s artistic thinking.
