Hermann Nitsch’s “Traubenfleisch” returns to the stage in Sicily

Almost ten years after its world premiere at the nitsch museum in Mistelbach, Hermann Nitsch’s monumental symphony “Traubenfleisch” returns to the stage, bringing its powerful sonic world to life once again. On 7 November 2026 at 21:00, the work will be performed in the auditorium of the MAC – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Ludovico Corrao in Gibellina, Sicily.

At the conductor’s podium will be Andrea Cusumano, who in 2017 transcribed Nitsch’s original graphic score for orchestra and conducted its world premiere. Together with the orchestra and choir of the Conservatorio Alessandro Scarlatti in Palermo and the Associazione Musicale Gioacchino Rossini, he will bring Nitsch’s extraordinary musical vision to life once more.

For Hermann Nitsch, who passed away in 2022, music was far more than an independent art form – it was an essential part of his all-encompassing artistic universe. The return of “Traubenfleisch” to the concert stage makes this remarkable work from his artistic legacy accessible to audiences once again, offering a renewed encounter with a perhaps lesser-known dimension of his oeuvre.

The fact that the symphony will be performed in Gibellina lends the occasion a special poetic resonance. Rebuilt following the devastating earthquake of 1968, the Sicilian town has evolved into a vibrant centre for contemporary art. In this setting, shaped by artistic expression and renewal, Nitsch’s musical work finds a resonant space where past and present converge – allowing its powerful sound world to be experienced anew, far beyond the borders of Lower Austria.
