The senses in exhibitions
a lecture by Elisabetta Modena, PhD
April 28, 2026, 6pm
Museo Hermann Nitsch, Napoli, IT

“Sensi in Mostra” is the third event in the context of the exhibition “Gesamtkunstwerk. Il laboratorio dei sensi” (Gesamtkunstwerk. The laboratory of the senses) at the Museo Hermann Nitsch in Naples.
The lecture will analyze what remains in the traces of Nitsch’s “relics,” critically rethinking the tools of art history, starting from a sensorial and aesthetic experience. What remains in the traces and “relics” of experiences that centered on the body? Which senses were involved, and which can be reactivated through their musealization?
Elisabetta Modena, PhD, is a researcher in Contemporary Art History at IULM University in Milan. Her interests lie at the intersection of visual arts history, media history and theory, history and theory of exhibition display, and digital and video game culture.
