From 23 August, selected works by Nitsch will be on display at Kunsthandel Pohlhammer in Steyr. Gallery owner Elfriede Pohlhammer knew the headstrong and controversial artist personally. She will be showing selected works by the world-famous action artist every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in her art space at Stadtplatz 29.
Nitsch explored the boundaries of art and polarized opinion like few others with his Schüttbilder (action paintings) and Orgien Mysterien Theater (Orgies Mysteries Theater), which featured the use of animal blood. He was a provocative figure in Austria’s ultra-conservative post-war society.
The exhibition runs until 13 September, 2025.
