Diversity in the CAAC Collection
The Photographic Eye of Alberto García-Alix
The group exhibition at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, curated by Alberto García-Alix, focuses on the diversity of contemporary photography in the museum’s own collection.
The works in the collection are a mirror in which we view the many facets of our lives and our society. We see the metropolis, politics, the social landscape and the human condition. It is about inclusion and tolerance, radicalism and feminism. The identity of the CAAC’s photographic collection and its most striking feature lies in the diversity of visual proposals, in their eclecticism. The conceptual approaches of the various artists could not be more different.
Curator Alberto García-Alix on the creation of the exhibition:
“This curatorial journey has been a constant challenge of how to bring together such different perspectives. Each work in the collection challenges me and requires a careful reading. I need to understand its message and context. After studying and revisiting them a hundred times, I asked myself a thousand questions. What was the intention of each work? How to categorize the authors? How can I tie them all into an explanatory narrative? First, I tried to link them together, asking myself what thread connects Joan Fontcuberta to Daido Moriyama. What is the intersection between Hermann Nitsch and Miguel Trillo? And the dichotomy? I thought extensively about how I could structure the exhibition and even considered making a very limited selection and breaking the exhibition down to find its essence. However, I realized that if I didn’t show as much as possible, I would lose the main goal: to present the collection.
I assessed worlds, actions and forms. I also organized, measured, removed and added in order to find the identity of the exhibition. In the process, I enjoyed the work of my fellow photographers and learned from them. With Viennese Actionism, for example, I immersed myself in the turmoil of an era, in the search for a political break, in the art of the body, in the rawness of the wound. I am a contemporary of these ideas; I even believe that we are all contemporaries of the images we present.”
The exhibition “Diversity in the CAAC Collection. The Photographic Eye of Alberto García-Alix” can be seen in Seville until May 25, 2025.
