THOU SHALT MAKE AN IMAGE UNTO THEE
group show
October 22, 2025, 6.30pm
Künstlerhaus, Vienna, AT

The focus of the group exhibition in the Künstlerhaus Vienna are works whose creators approach Christian iconography with a critical but also loving, humorous and feminist perspective and enable new perspectives on image motifs that have been handed down over centuries.
The exhibition THOU SHALT MAKE AN IMAGE UNTO THEE (DU SOLLST DIR EIN BILD MACHEN) tells of the imaginative power of religious experience, its visual counterpart in the Christian pictorial tradition, and its interpretation by contemporary artists. The church and art are also connected by the irrational, the mysterious, and especially the imagination and creative power to create a world with its own rules and laws—a world that also reflects back on our lives and tells us about our existence. A variety of these worlds are made visible through works by 44 artists, including Hermann Nitsch, Arnulf Rainer, Renate Bertelmann, and Marina Abramovic.
The exhibition opens (at free admission) on Wednesday, 22 October, 2025, at 18:00.
