AESTHETIC JUDGMENT
Michael Fleischhacker and Franz Schuh in conversation on Nitsch and philosophy on Saturday, 23 November 2024 at 18:00.

“Art expresses nothing but itself.” (Hermann Nitsch)

The claim that works of art – which are designated as such -, make, is that they speak for themselves. However, talking about works of art, i.e. making judgments about them, is part of “culture”, which can be understood sarcastically as providing topics for conversation. In “aesthetics” as a discipline of thought, the privilege of language is expressed: no one has to be able to paint, but anyone who cannot speak is isolated as if by punishment.

“Aesthetics” can be understood as the study of art, and if one “assumes” that art is something that one – justifiably – calls that, the question of aesthetic judgment becomes important. The word “judgment” has become an integral part of aesthetics thanks to Immanuel Kant’s art philosophy. This applies above all to Kant’s definition of the judgment about art, which results from an indeterminable connection between feeling and reason. We will also talk about how one can “assess” Hermann Nitsch’s art from such a perspective.
