HERMANN NITSCH

Life and Work

An exhibition about Hermann Nitsch, his life and his work.

The year 2018 is dedicated to the 80th birthday of Hermann Nitsch. On this occasion the nitsch museum presents the exhibition “Hermann Nitsch – Life and Work”. Born at the beginning of the war, raised in the post-war years and repeatedly condemned for his artistic activities, the artist is today a state prize winner and celebrated world star. In the context of the biographical exhibition, his extraordinary course of life will be examined not only on an artistic level, but for the first time also on a personal level.

The artist’s career is traced in the form of a 130-metre long exhibition tour and the most important phases of his life are illustrated with the help of key works and original documents. The journey through time focuses on Nitsch’s artistic work of the last 65 years and on personal events that have had a significant influence on his further development. The tour is complemented by a 130-metre-long frieze above, which contains works from the universal artist’s various areas of work.

The biographical exhibition enables the visitor to comprehend the extraordinary life of Hermann Nitsch, to recognize connections between his life and his work and in this way to gain new insights into man and his total work of art.
